Best Cheap Cordless Phones
Cheap cordless phones are the perfect compliment to a cheap home phone service. They may not have all the bells and whistles, but it probably doesn't matter in homes where landline phones are seldom used.
However none of us want to blow money on a phone that's not going to last for at least a year or two. Unfortunately there are several well known brands that outsource all manufacturing to the cheapest off-shore contractors. They pay little attention to quality control and their cheap cordless phones seldom last longer than a month or two. On the other hand there are one or two manufactures that excel at manufacturing low cost high quality products.
Vtech is a Hong Kong based company that has mastered the science of cutting costs while maintaining rigorous quality standards. It manufactures both Vtech and ATT cordless phones.
Vtech Cordless Phones
Vtech phones are consistently reliable and deliver excellent voice clarity. It's not unusual for them to give trouble free service for many years.
Vtech CS6219-2 and CS6229-2
For a few more dollars you can buy one of Vtech's top selling DECT 6.0 phones. They have two handsets and additional units can be added. Once again they aren't over endowed with features, but consistently do well in cordless phone reviews because they are reliable, good looking and easy to use.
The CS6229-2 incorporates a cordless phone answering machine, while the CS6219-2 doesn't.
The Vtech CS5111 is a non-expandable single handset 5.8 Ghz cordless phone. It does all the basic things as well as caller ID/call waiting and has a twenty entry phone book. It also works well as a wall mount cordless phone. They are not susceptible to WiFi interference and have a few ring tones to choose from.
No answering machine, headset jack, talking caller ID ...
As well as being a cheap home phone the Vtech CS5111 is also popular with teenagers and college students who use them as MagicJack phones. For about $25 they are a bargain.
One of the few negatives common to all Vtech cordless phones is that they use proprietary battery packs. While they generally last for a year or two, they are expensive to replace. It fact it usually makes more sense to get another cheap phone, than put replacement cordless phone batteries in an old phone.
Panasonic Cordless Phones
Panasonic cordless telephones are generally not regarded as cheap cordless phones. It's true they are premium phones with lots of excellent features and usually cost more than the alternatives. However the cost difference diminishes in proportion to the number of handsets.
For example the Panasonic KX-TG6545B with five handsets is arguably one of the best cordless phones and costs under $100. While not everyone needs five handsets, at $20 each you can put one in every corner of the house and keep one as a spare.
The other nice thing about Panasonic cordless phones is that they use standard rechargeable AA batteries that can found in any corner store for a few dollars. They also have headset jacks and exclusive features such as Talking Caller ID. As always, you get what you pay for.
The cost of cordless phones has fallen dramatically over recent years. It's coincided with the adoption of the DECT 6.0 standard by all cordless phone manufacturers. They no longer need to manufacture proprietary components and as a result have been able to slash their manufacturing costs to meet the demand for cheap cordless phones.
